This new level of code is very similar to HMC V7R3.5.0 code with the ability to communicate with
POWER7 processor based servers enabled.
HMC V7R7.1 can be installed new onto an HMC, or upgraded from an HMC running V6R1.3.0 or
higher.
HMCV7R7.1 code is required when managing a POWER7 processor based server.

HMC V7R7.1.0 Facts
HMC V7 R710 is the minimum level for POWER7 support
HMC used to manage any POWER7 processor based server,
– 7310/7042-CR3 or later model rack-mount HMC
– 7310-C05 or later desk side HMC
If IBM Systems Director is used to manage an HMC or if the HMC manages more
than 254 partitions
– the HMC should have 3GB of RAM minimum and be a 7310/7042-CR3 model or later
rack-mount, or 7310-C06 or later desk side
HMC V7R7.1.0.1 or later support POWER5, POWER6 and POWER7 servers
– POWER5 servers should be at system firmware 240_358
– POWER6 servers should be at system firmware Ex340_101 or Ex350_039
– Incorrect firmware and HMC versions will result in mismatch error message
Maximum 48 servers (non Power 590/595) or 32 IBM Power 590/595
– Maximum 1024 partitions across the managed systems

From the Read me for HMC V7R7.1.0
Note: HMC Model 7310-C03 cannot be upgraded to HMC Version 7.7 If an HMC is used to
manage any POWER7 processor based server, the HMC must be a model CR3 or later model
rack-mount HMC or C05 or later desk side HMC.
When IBM Systems Director is used to manage an HMC or if the HMC manages more than 254
partitions, the HMC should have 3GB of RAM minimum and be CR3 model or later rack-mount or
C06 or later desk side.
HMC Version 7.7.1 supports managing a maximum of 48 servers (non Power 590/595 models) or
32 IBM Power 590/595 servers with a maximum of 1024 partitions across the managed servers.

Enhancements
Added support for POWER7 processor based servers
Enhancement to support status updates for IBM Director servers that connect to
the HMC
Removed restriction of 128 in the Active Memory Shared (AMS) partitions in a
Shared Memory Pool for POWER7 processor based servers
Removed the virtual adapter slot restriction for Virtual I/O Servers (VIOS)
partitions for POWER7 processor based servers
Performance enhancements to support HMC that manage large partition counts
Enhancements to support Active Memory Expansion
Extensive logging has been added to events recorded during Scheduled
Operations
Error handling has been added to detect rare cases of startup and initialization
problems in the HMC

Current Configuration
7 5/14/2010 © 2009 IBM Corporation
There is a new option under Activate for a partition.
Use the Activate - Current Configuration task to quickly start one or more logical partitions
without using partition profiles.
When you use this option, the Hardware Management Console (HMC) uses the current
configuration data for the partitions on the hypervisor, including current assigned resources, to
start the partitions. By doing so, the HMC is able to start the selected partitions more quickly than
when using the Activate - Profile task.
The HMC cannot activate a partition if the partition state is such that the partition is not capable of
being started. Also, the HMC cannot active a partition by using its current configuration if the
partition does not have an active profile associated with it, such as a newly created partition. In
this case, you must use the Activate - Profile task to start the partition.

Types of Dumps
System dump
–Crashes system New Dump option
Resource dump
–Does NOT crash system
–Requires HMC V7R3.5.0 or higher and POWER6 Ex350 or higher
FSP dump
–Does not crash FSP
Three ways:
1) control panel
2) ASMi
3) HMC

System Dump – a dump of the hardware and server firmware content for the managed system.
This task will abnormally end the managed system and all its partitions.
Resource Dump - a platform resource dump of the server firmware for the managed system. A
platform resource dump is non-disruptive dump that you can use to capture server firmware
diagnostic data.
FSP Dump – Also called a Service Processor Dump. There are two options for this type of dump.
A System Controller Dump is of the service processor. The service processor allows the
HMC to communicate with and control the managed system.
A Node Controller Dump is

Ask which type of dump

If you are given directions to take a dump, be sure to get clarified which type of dump to take. If a
system dump is requested, know this will abnormally end the customers managed systems and
operating partitions!
Control Panel Functions
41 – new non-disruptive PHYP-generated platform system dump (Resource Dump)
42 – old disruptive FSP-generated platform system dump
43 – old system model service processor dump

Resource selector
Enter the resource selector that you obtained from your hardware platform service provider. If you do not
have a value to enter, leave this field empty and click No to continue on the confirmation window. When the
field is empty, no filter is applied to the resource dump. An unfiltered resource dump can take an extensive
amount of time to process and may stop other dumps from processing.
If you are asked to take a resource dump, the person requesting the dump should provide you the
resource selector, or take the default and leave the field blank.

Results

The first and third dumps listed here are resource dumps. The second entry was from a service
processor dump. The last two entries are the result of a system dump.
resource sysdumps will be 1xxxxxxx
sys dump sysdumps will be 0xxxxxxx
The HMC command "lsdump -h" will list the dumps available on the HMC.

If the managed system is
managed by two HMC,
there are some possibilities
that resource dump is
generated on the HMC
other than
the one you issue the
generating command.

Options shown in menu which are not useable.
These options are example of some of the changes in ASM. These options report in on the menu,
but are not applicable to the system they were taken from, as they are for stand alone or non-
HMC managed systems. No help text available with the options.
Resource Dumps can be taken from the ASM menu.
