Exercise 8 – Resource / System Dump
What This Exercise is About
This exercise will give the student the opportunity to go through the process of requesting and capturing Resource and System dumps and also the differences between these two.
At the end of the lab, you should be able to:
- Become familiar with the options needed to create and capture dumps
Required Materials
- Any running system except Scooby with IBM i partition running
- Access to POWER6 and POWER7 Information Center
- Flash drive to be obtained from the instructor
It will take approximately 1.0 hours to complete this exercise
Exercise Instructions
This exercise will be performed on system assigned by an instructor, using the HMC perform a Resource dump. Then copy the Resource dump to a portable media.
Part A: Finding Dump information
- Navigate yourself through the POWER6 & POWER7 Information Center, find and read up the section/s explaining and performing Dumps and answer the following questions?
- What is the link to the POWER7 Info Center section regarding Dumps?

- How many ways are there to perform the System and Resource Dumps?

- The section you found the answer for question #1 lists only two ways on how to initiate and collect dumps. Where would you find the 3rd way and what is the link to it?

- Using the knowledge you just gained reading up in the Dump sections you found in step #1, answer the following questions.
- What effect on a running system will have initiating a Resource dump?

Using the systems HMC, initiate the Resource dump ….. leave the ‘Resource Selector’ field blank and then initiate the Resource dump again with ‘VSP’ entered in the ‘Resource Selector’ field- Are both attempts named the same? Provide the names bellow
