Before you begin
v You must install this package to connect AIX hosts to an IBM XIV Storage
System.
v During the installation process, the Host Attachment Kit package removes any
customized parameters for AIX hdisk devices that correspond to XIV disks.
Installing previous versions
Do not install previous versions of this package because your server might not be
able to start afterwards.
Standard IBM installation
The Host System Attachment Kit for AIX consists of three AIX installp packages
that are bundled with an installation script.
The following filesets are included in the Host System Attachment Kit:
disk.fcp.2810.rte
The ODM changes that are required to support the IBM XIV Storage
System with AIX hosts.
xpyv.rte
The Python interpreter.
xiv.hostattachment.tools - xiv_devlist
This command gathers information about the storage volumes that are
attached to the IBM XIV Storage System.
Before you install the Host Attachment Kit, you must have the appropriate AIX
release installed and you must configure the IBM XIV installation package. The
IBM XIV installation package performs an important post-installation function. For
these reasons, be sure to follow the detailed installation procedure described in
“Detailed installation procedure” on page 3.
Load balancing
You can change the mode and queue depth.
round_robin
By default, the Host Attachment Kit configures multipathing to work in
round_robin mode with a queue depth of 1. Currently, queue depth must be 1 if
round_robin mode is used. For AIX 5.3 TL10 and later and AIX 6.1 TL3, the queue
depth limitation of 1 does not exist for XIV devices.
failover_only
Because a queue depth of 1 can impact performance, you can change the
multipathing mode to failover_only and use a higher queue depth. For example,
you can use a queue depth of 32.
Important: If you use failover_only mode, only one path is used for any given
hdisk.
To change the mode to failover_only and change the queue depth, set the
following environment variables before you install the Host Attachment Kit
package:
2 IBM XIV Storage System Software: Host System Attachment Guide for AIX 1.0.4
Export XIV_DEF_ALGO=failover_only
Export XIV_DEF_QD=32
Detailed installation procedure
Perform the following steps to install the Host Attachment Kit:
1. Check if you have a regular AIX fix package installed. Issue the following
command:
instfix -iv | grep "2810 round"
v If you have a regular fix package installed, go to step 6 below.
v If you do not have a regular fix package installed, proceed to step 2.
2. Download either a regular fix or the latest service pack.
3. Check if you have an XIV eFIX installed. Issue the following command:
emgr -l | grep XIV
v If you do not have an eFIX for XIV installed, go to step 5.
v If you have an eFIX for XIV installed, record the eFIX ID and go to step 4.
4. Remove the eFIX. Issue the following command:
emgr -r -L eFIX ID
Important: Do not restart the system.
5. Install the downloaded regular fix or a full service pack. Ensure that the
installation is successful.
Important: Do not restart the system.
6. Open a terminal to the host.
7. Go to the directory that contains the Host Attachment archive and extract it.
Issue the following command to extract the archive:
# gunzip -c XIV_host_attach-1.0.*-*.tar.gz | tar xvf -
8. Go to the newly created directory and start the Host Attachment Kit installer.
Issue the following commands to start the installer:
# cd XIV_host_attach-1.0.*-platform
# /bin/sh ./install.sh
The following prompt is displayed:
Welcome to the XIV Host Attachment Bundle installer.
Would you like to proceed and install the Host Attachment Kit? [Y/n]:
9. Enter y to confirm the installation process. The installer proceeds with the
installation. The following is an example of the output that is displayed:
Please wait while the installer validates your existing configuration...
---------------------------------------------------------------
Please wait, the Host Attachment Bundle is being installed...
---------------------------------------------------------------
The installation of the XIV Host Attachment Kit Bundle was successful
Please refer to the Host Attachment Guide for information on how to
configure this host.
Results
After the package is installed and the system is restarted, the following values are
used:
Host System Attachment Kit for AIX 3
v XIV Fibre Channel disks are multipathed and seen as IBM 2810XIV Fibre
Channel Disks
v If a real volume is not assigned to LUN 0, it is not multipathed and is seen as
IBM 2810XIV-LUN-0 Fibre Channel Array Controller
This is a correct and supported configuration.
If XIV disks are seen as MPIO Other FC SCSI Disk Drive, the XIV package is not
installed and you have the built-in AIX multipathing support for XIV that was
introduced in AIX service packs released in August 2008. For example, AIX 6.1
TL2. This type of configuration is not supported. IBM only supports a connection
by AIX hosts to IBM XIV Storage System when this package is installed.
Removing this package
If you no longer want to connect to the IBM XIV Storage System, you can uninstall
this package.
About this task
You can perform the following steps to remove the package:
1. Upgrade to this version.
2. Remove the installed package.
3. Restart the system immediately.
Hints and tips
The hints and tips that are gathered here are from actual problem experiences. You
might find that one of the solutions is right for addressing your problem.
Installation mode for 3rd party multipathing
If you want to use third party multipathing software to manage the system, you
must set the following environment variable before you install the Host
Attachment Kit package:
export XIV_NOMP=yes
This variable allows the package to install non-multipathed ODM definitions.
Notes:
1. This mode only allows third party software to take all the required measures to
provide multipathing capabilities. It is the responsibility of the third party
software to ensure flawless multipathing and other operations. Contact IBM
XIV to determine if the third party software is supported.
2. The variable XIV_DEF_ALGO does not apply to this mode.
3. The disks are not multipathed and are not seen as IBM 2810XIV Non-MPIO Fibre
Channel Disk.
4. If a real volume is not assigned to LUN 0, it is not multipathed and is seen as
IBM 2810XIV-LUN-0 Fibre Channel Array Controller
Fixing the boot device
Problem
The following conditions result in a bosboot problem:
4 IBM XIV Storage System Software: Host System Attachment Guide for AIX 1.0.4
v Using the Boot from SAN configuration when one of the following
conditions exist:
– No XIV multipathing is installed
– A special non-multipathing XIV ODM is installed
v You have booted the server from a path that is different than the one
that is used by rootvg hdisk.
If you issue bosboot -a, the 0301-168 bosboot message is displayed. The
following is an example of the output that is displayed:
The current boot logical volume, /dev/hd5,does not exist on /dev/hdiskX.
If you try to install device driver software (other than the 1.0.4.0 version of
this package), the installation fails with the following messages:
0503-409 installp: bosboot verification starting...
0503-497 installp: An error occurred during bosboot verification processing.
Solution
To correct the problem, run the fix_ipldev.sh script that is provided and
then reissue the command that failed. After a successful installation, the
script is available at /usr/lpp/disk.fcp.2810. This script is only to be used
for a non-multipathed ODM installation.
Utilities
The Host Attachment Kit includes the xiv_devlist utility.
xiv_devlist
The xiv_devlist utility lists XIV volumes that are available to the host. The
following information is provided for each volume:
v Device
v Volume name
v XIV host
v Size
v Paths
v XIV ID
v Vol
The xiv_devlist utility lists XIV and non-XIV devices separately.
xiv_diag
The Host Attachment Kit provides a diagnostic data collector utility called
xiv_diag. The xiv_diag is a cross-platform utility that gathers diagnostic data from
supported operating systems.
The xiv_diag utility gathers information from the operating system and stores it in
a zip file. You can then send this zip file to IBM XIV support teams for review and
analysis.
Issue the following command to run the xiv_diag utility:xiv_diag
Host System Attachment Kit for AIX 5
Output example of xiv_diag
xiv_diag
Please type in a directory in which to place the xiv_diag file [default:
/tmp]:
Creating xiv_diag zip file /tmp/xiv_diag-results_2009-5-17_15-7-45.zip
...
...
INFO: Closing xiv_diag zip file /tmp/xiv_diag-results_2009-6-24_19-18-
