Troubleshooting

Problem

On IBM Storage Configuration Manager (SCM), RAIDed Shared Storage Module (RSSM) Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) drives cannot be readied for removal, as a typical drive enclosure system would. Users can use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to perform this task instead.

Resolving The Problem

RETAIN tip: H214175

Symptom

On IBM Storage Configuration Manager (SCM), RAIDed Shared Storage Module (RSSM) Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) drives cannot be readied for removal, as a typical drive enclosure system would. Users can use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to perform this task instead.

Affected configurations

The system is configured with one or more of the following option part numbers:

  1. IBM BladeCenter S SAS RAID Controller Module, option part number 43W3584, any replacement part number

This tip is not system specific.

This tip is not software specific.

Workaround

Refer to the following steps for removal and replacement of PFA hard drives using CLI commands.

Sample configuration

  1. Drives 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 are group member of a RAID5 array
  2. Drive 1:6 is a global spare
  3. Drive 1:1 is currently PFA and needs to be replaced.

Steps for the replacement

  1. From the Command Line Interface (CLI), issue the list drive command to check current drive status:

|0|1:1|3LQ20XXM| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|
|1|1:2|3LQ20ZWM| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|
|2|1:3|3LQ210N5| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA29|
|3|1:6|3LQ20ZLS| 68GB| -- |GLS| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|

  1. Issue the following command to copy the data on drive 1:1 to drive 1:6:

copyback -source 1:1 -dest 1:6

  1. Issue the view long running tasks command to check copy status. The CopyBack task is displayed as follows. Repeat this step until none of the tasks are displayed. Then, go to the next step.

| Pool name | Task name | percent complete | Status | Tray |
| pool1 | CopyBack | 80% | Running| N/A |

  1. Issue the list drive command to check current drive status. The drive 1:1 should be displayed as UNA (Unassigned), and is now ready to be replaced.

|0|1:1|3LQ20XXM| 68GB| -- |UNA| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|
|1|1:2|3LQ20ZWM| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|
|2|1:3|3LQ210N5| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA29|
|3|1:6|3LQ20ZLS| 68GB|pool1|GRP| OK|Online| 1| 1|15000|BA2D|

  1. Replace drive 1:1.
  2. Perform copyback to drive 1:1, then set drive 1:6 as a global spare. Otherwise, simply set drive 1:1 as a global spare if copyback is not needed.

To set a global spare, issue the command: global spare -add -slot 1:1

Additional information

For concurrent drive replacement, a PFA drive should be unassigned from an array. Without this operation, it is possible that the the drive could be accessed during removal.

RSSM firmware version 1.3.2.003 (H3105) or a later level is recommended for this operation, because there were some known issues affecting a PFA drives in earlier levels of firmware.
